Bern: Don’t Cry For Me Bern
Bern, the capital of Switzerland, is one of Europe’s oldest cities. Dating back to the 12th century, Bern’s medieval architecture still remains for visitors to enjoy. The city will remind visitors of a small town or village, not the thriving capital city that it has become. Many famous people have visited Bern and all leave calling it one of the most beautiful and wonderful cities they have visited.
The city of Bern is proud of its traditions and works to continue them into the 21st century. A festival has grown around one such tradition. Every Thursday and Saturday have been traditional market days in Bern for hundreds of years. Farmers come to the city from the surrounding countryside to sell fresh produce, grains, and meat. In November, a special market was held for local people to stock up on onions for the coming winter.
This November market is now held on the fourth Monday of each November and a festival has grown up around the onion market day. The Wiebelmarkt has become one of Bern’s favorite celebrations. Early on the morning of the Wiebelmarkt famers will arrive in the city before daybreak to set up their tables and display their onions. Over 100 tons of onions are usually sold on this day alone. Visitors will enjoy onion dishes such as delicious onion soup and entertainment throughout the day.
Tourists visiting Bern in November are encouraged to bring tissues. Onions are known to produce tears!
